A counsellor is a helpful person, a friend and a guide to the child. One, who understands in depth the feelings of the child and what exactly he/she means. The counsellor respects the person in the child and his/her right to freedom of choice. She not only understands the strengths in the child but also has the ability to solve his or her problems, when faced in favourable conditions.
Counselling in our school is broadly covered in 3 categories:

  1. Academic Counselling This constitutes major portion of a child’s activity in school. There is a need for constant interaction between teachers, parents and child. Counsellor has helped in bridging the communication gap between all three for the betterment of the child. Sincere effort has been made in strengthening student’s academic skills by covering the various important topics i.e. Time Management, Effective Study Techniques, Improving Concentration and Memory, Handling Exam Stress. These sessions have been held both individually as well as in groups.
  2. Behavioral Counselling : Regular visits to the classrooms and interaction with students enable the counsellor in establishing rapport with children, identifying problem cases and counseling them, in a well formulated manner so as to aid to contribute to their growth. Common social and emotional problems identified in children in the school are: lack of social skills, lack of confidence, stage fright, sibling rivalry, family discord, jealousy, bullying, anxiety and aggression. Group sessions are held for children on Life Skills such as self-awareness, interpersonal relationship, problem solving, decision making, empathy building, coping with stress and anger management.
  3. Individual and Group Counselling : An individual and group counseling is provided to students to enable them to understand their problems like adjustment problems, poor study habits, interpersonal problems, unrealistic educational plans, personal, social, educational, economical or emotional problems, Exams de- stressing specially during board exams.. Counseling cases come either voluntarily or referred by teachers, parents or friends. Sometimes the counselor identifies cases himself while delivering. Counselor maintains a register for counseling cases. She has a professional responsibility towards her client because counseling is confidential and aim of counseling is self understanding, self acceptance and self –realization.
  4. Career counseling : Workshops are organized for senior students, imparting the general idea of all available options for each stream. Talks are arranged by experts from various fields from time to time.
